Everyone loves Southern style food, and there are many of us who do everything possible to try and emulate exactly what we love about it. The problem is, Southern style comfort food often has a lot of excess calories and things that we shouldn’t be ingesting on a regular basis.
Nowadays, there are a lot of us who are trying to eat healthier and that’s not always the easiest thing for us to try and sort out when we want those amazingly greasy and buttery foods that we get when we visit our grandparents. So, how can we make sure that we’re doing the best we can in regards to food? Can we make our Southern-style favorites without making them super fatty? Here are some ideas.
Broast Chicken Instead of Frying It!
Considering almost everyone’s need to watch their fat intake, the discussion of Broasted Chicken vs Fried Chicken is a big deal, and there are a lot of questions that come with it. They look a lot alike, but the difference is in the cooking process. Both have that signature breading and crust. But, broasted chicken is deep fried in a pressure cooker instead of being dropped into a pot. While they’re both deep-fried, the broasted chicken’s process prevents some of the additional fat from getting into the breading, and it can have 40%+ less fat than some fried chicken.
What’s in Your Grits?
While grits themselves are relatively healthy they’re made from hominy, which is made from small bits of corn, and have lots of vitamins and minerals. The problem with grits is what people put in them loads of butter, bacon, cheese, and other fatty foods are common ingredients that come along with grits. Instead, consider making grits with turkey sausage, shrimp, or other sorts of seafood. Or, you can make the grits even healthier by using a cauliflower base instead of a hominy one.
Fried Green Tomatoes Can Be Healthy, Too!
If you bake them, of course! Get some great looking green tomatoes, coat them with a Greek Yogurt and Panko crumb mixture, and put them in the oven. Not only does it help you to reduce the fattiness from the frying oil, but if you do it right, it can end up being a lot crunchier than what you’d find in a standard fried green tomato. How awesome is that?
As you can see, there are a lot of things that you can do in order to ensure that your southern-style food is as healthy as possible. You can find all sorts of recipes on the web and see what others suggest when it comes to trying to make some of these delicious and iconic dishes that many of us enjoy having on a regular basis. Figure out exactly what it is that you need to do to make these great dishes look and taste great no matter what you decide to do in order to put a bit of a twist on them in the first place.
